A Smalltowne Christmas

For A Smalltowne Christmas, I wanted the set to feel instantly recognizable without becoming a pile of holiday decoration. The production needed a place where community scenes, musical numbers, and sentimental moments could all happen without changing the rules of the space every time the story shifted.

The design works like a small public square: open enough for choreography, specific enough to tell the audience where they are, and warm enough to let the holiday tone arrive before anyone has to explain it.

The danger with a Christmas show is that the scenery can start decorating instead of supporting. I tried to keep the visual language clear: familiar storefront texture, seasonal color, and enough architectural rhythm to frame the performers without crowding them.

What mattered most was making the space useful. The town had to feel friendly and lived-in, but it also had to leave room for entrances, music, and movement. That balance is where the scenic design becomes more than a backdrop; it gives the production a home base.
