The Glass Menagerie

In the 2011 Glass Menagerie, the scrim walls did the central work. The apartment could feel enclosed in one moment and then become porous as the city appeared through it, making Tom's need to leave visible inside the architecture. That transparency let memory arrive as a lighting event rather than a scenic change.

The city was not a backdrop pasted behind the room. It was a second layer waiting inside the image, revealed by light and sightline so the apartment could hold both confinement and distance. The family scenes still have a real room to play in, but the walls never let that room become permanent.

That permeability separated this production from a literal apartment. Domestic scale remained intact, but the edges could soften, disappear, or expose the larger city Tom is already imagining. The set held the family close while quietly making escape visible.
