About

For Urinetown: The Musical, I embraced Brechtian and German Expressionist influences to create a dystopian world that reflects the play’s satirical take on power and rebellion. Moving away from the typical steampunk aesthetic, I used stark, angular concrete textures and sharp lines, inspired by The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, to establish an oppressive and distorted atmosphere. Strategic lighting, including Edison bulbs and a symbolic ghost light, added layers of meaning, highlighting themes of control and freedom. This minimalist yet intense design serves both as a visual satire and a critical reflection of societal issues.
