The Spitfire Grill is an American musical that follows Percy Talbot, who has just been released from jail. Looking for a new beginning, the parolee travels to a small town in Wisconsin where she finds work at Hannah’s Spitfire Grill- the only eatery in this depressed town. When Hannah becomes ill, Percy steps in to help her sell the restaurant. With no takers, they decide to raffle it off with an entrance fee of one hundred dollars and an essay on “why you want to win the grill”. Things heat up in the Spitfire Grill as more and more entries come in!
When reading this production, I envisioned the Wisconsin wilderness surrounding the Spitfire Grill. The Spitfire Grill represents hope, family, and community. Placing the Grill in a circle at the center allowed the action of the musical to move cinematically revolving around the central metaphor of the musical.
