39

A birthday reflection on creative work, unseen growth, collaboration, curiosity, and staying open to what comes next.

Personal Essay

Today I turn 39.

Last year, I wrote about authenticity. About resisting the pressure to constantly reinvent myself and instead choosing to show up as who I am.

I still believe that.

But if this year has taught me anything, it’s that life continues to surprise you.

Over the past twelve months, I’ve had the opportunity to work on projects I never could have predicted a few years ago. Some I can talk about. Some I can’t. I’ve collaborated with talented artists, designers, and clients. I’ve worked on stories for the stage and experiences beyond it. I’ve spent time creating worlds that will be seen by thousands of people and others that may never be fully visible to the public at all.

That’s the funny thing about creative work.

A great deal of it happens quietly.

Long before an audience arrives. Long before an opening night. Long before a project can be announced.

Much of the work exists in sketches, conversations, drafts, revisions, and possibilities.

And yet those unseen moments often shape us the most.

This year reminded me that careers rarely move in straight lines. They unfold through relationships, opportunities, risks, setbacks, and occasional leaps of faith.

Looking back, I’m grateful for all of it.

For the collaborators who continue to invite me into their stories.

For the friends and family who support the journey.

For the students, artists, and audiences who make this profession meaningful.

And for the chance to keep growing.

Thirty-nine feels like standing in a doorway.

Not because of any single accomplishment, but because I can sense another chapter beginning to take shape.

The details aren’t all clear yet.

Maybe they’re not supposed to be.

For now, I’m content to remain curious.

To keep making things.

To keep telling stories.

And to stay open to whatever comes next.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of the journey so far.

I’m excited for what’s ahead.
