Directed by Betsy Mugavero, this Romeo and Juliet brought clarity and emotional depth to Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy. Performed in the Engelstad Theatre’s Elizabethan-inspired outdoor venue, the production embraced classical aesthetics while allowing for moments of subtle innovation.

Scenic design by Jo Winiarski featured a clean, architectural framework that supported both intimate and large-scale moments—from balcony scenes to public brawls. As Assistant Scenic Designer, I was responsible for the 3D modeling and drafting of the set, translating the design into a functional, buildable package suited to the Festival’s repertory environment. Working closely with the production team, I ensured that the structure integrated seamlessly with existing venue infrastructure while preserving the design’s historical integrity and visual elegance.

The set served as a neutral but expressive canvas, adaptable to shifting locations and moods, allowing the text and performances to remain at the forefront. Bill Black’s period costume design—complete with doublets, wimples, and formal robes—complemented the set’s restrained palette and reinforced the themes of lineage, control, and rebellion.

Standout performances from Naiya Vanessa McCalla (Juliet) and Ty Fanning (Romeo) brought youthful passion and precision to the roles, supported by moving portrayals of Friar Lawrence (Nathan Hosner) and the Nurse (Alex Keiper). Mugavero’s direction emphasized connection and clarity, letting each design element serve the emotional arc of the story.

This production exemplified the power of restraint and collaboration, and my role in the modeling and drafting process was central to realizing the clean, flexible world envisioned by the design.
