Design Notes

For Tomás and the Library Lady, I set out to create a scenic environment that would mirror the warmth, wonder, and transformative power of reading. Adapted from the beloved book by Pat Mora, this story centers on a young boy’s journey of discovery, imagination, and empowerment through the world of books. Working in close collaboration with the creative team, my goal was to design a space that felt not only functional for theatrical storytelling but emotionally resonant for audiences of all ages.

The library set is built around a palette of earthy tones, natural wood textures, and warm lighting, evoking a sense of comfort and welcome. Tall bookshelves line the space, filled with colorful spines that hint at the infinite possibilities inside each volume. The environment is cozy but not static—each scenic element is designed to flex and flow, allowing the space to subtly transform as Tomás moves through different emotional and intellectual landscapes.

At the heart of the set is a central librarian’s desk, which doubles as a storytelling platform. This elevated space becomes a symbolic threshold—where real life and imagination blur, and where mentorship and curiosity meet. Soft seating areas, potted plants, and reading nooks complete the picture, grounding the design in a familiar yet magical reality.

The design approach was intentionally minimal and fluid, inviting the audience’s imagination to fill in the details much like Tomás does through reading. Rather than rely on elaborate scene changes, the space adapts through blocking, lighting, and subtle reorientation of key props.

Ultimately, the scenic world for Tomás and the Library Lady serves as both a literal library and a metaphorical gateway—an open invitation to explore, learn, and dream.
