Brandon PT Davis’s Scenic Design for American Idiot at UC Irvine Applauded in The Show Report

Brandon PT Davis’s scenic design for American Idiot at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts (UC Irvine) was featured in a detailed 2018 review by The Show Report, which praised the production’s gritty, visceral aesthetic and high-octane energy.

Davis’s set featured “slick gray overhead stairs on each side with an overhang walkway and a mysterious doorway… [that] conjures up visions of the Starship Enterprise.” Beds and amps anchored the visual storytelling, while digital projections, graffiti, and strobe lighting added layered meaning and environmental context to the characters’ inner turmoil.

The review notes:

“Scenic Designer Brandon PT Davis rocked the set.”

Directed and choreographed by Andrew Palermo, with projections by Elizabeth Barrett and lighting by David Hernandez, the sold-out show played to full houses. Davis’s contribution grounded the production’s visual language—supporting the punk opera’s themes of disillusionment, addiction, and political angst with a flexible and symbolic spatial framework.
