Brandon PT Davis’s Scenic Design for The Penelopiad Featured in New University Review

Scenic design by Brandon PT Davis for The Penelopiad, featuring tree roots and minimalist ruins in UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor Theatre.

Brandon PT Davis’s scenic design was featured in a February 2020 review by New University, UC Irvine’s independent student-run newspaper, for his work on The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood. The production, directed by Sara Rodriguez, was staged at the Claire Trevor Theatre and explored the life and legacy of Penelope through themes of identity, memory, and myth.

The reviewer praised the visual storytelling of the set:

“The set, designed by Brandon PT Davis, featured tree roots stretching down from the ceiling, creating a sense of being underground that fit perfectly with Penelope’s narrating from the underworld of Hades. With crumbling pillars staggering across the stage, this minimalist set created a versatile scenic design that allowed for an easy shift between the different locations within the play.”Lauren Knight, New University

The production was part of UCI’s Women & Company season, which highlighted female-centered narratives. Davis’s design for The Penelopiad underscored the show’s emotional and poetic tone, supporting a haunting and fluid world that echoed the storytelling voice of Penelope and the chorus of maids.
